Warning Signs During Exercise You Should Never Ignore

Staying active is essential for good health, but it's equally important to recognize when your body is signaling a problem. While using gym equipment or engaging in any fitness routine, you should remain alert to these critical warning signs that may indicate a health issue.

1.Heart Rate Doesn’t Increase During Exercise
A normal response to physical activity is an elevated heart rate. If your heart rate does not increase proportionally with your workout intensity, this could be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease. It may suggest a risk of angina, heart attack, or even sudden cardiac arrest.

2.Chest Pain or Discomfort (Angina)
Exercise increases the workload of your heart. For middle-aged or older adults, especially those with arteriosclerosis, physical activity might trigger chest pain due to reduced blood flow. If you feel tightness or discomfort in your chest, stop exercising immediately and consider medical evaluation.

3.Headache During Exercise
Some individuals, particularly those with underlying heart conditions, may experience headaches instead of chest pain during exercise. If you feel unusual head pain during a workout, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider.

4.Abdominal Pain or Cramping
Sudden abdominal bloating or cramps during physical activity—especially after heavy sweating—may be due to dehydration or electrolyte loss, causing abdominal muscle spasms. Lying down and practicing deep abdominal breathing or gently massaging the abdominal area can help relieve the pain. Stay hydrated by drinking water with added electrolytes.

5.Stomach Cramps and Gastrointestinal Discomfort
If you experience stomach cramps, apply a warm compress to the upper abdomen and gently massage acupressure points such as Neiguan or Zusanli. Preventive measures include avoiding large meals, gas-producing foods (like beans and potatoes), and cold beverages before a workout.

6.Pain in the Liver Area
Liver-area pain (right upper abdomen) is common during activities like running. This may result from poor breathing technique. Try to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth and massage the back right side near the liver to relieve discomfort.

7.Spleen Pain
Pain on the left side of the upper abdomen may occur if your exercise intensity is too high. It’s typically due to spleen congestion caused by slow venous return. Massage pressure points near the 11th–12th thoracic vertebrae to alleviate the discomfort.

8.Dizziness or Fainting
Sudden dizziness or fainting can occur due to low blood pressure, especially when standing up too quickly or feeling anxious. If you experience lightheadedness, stop immediately and rest. Most episodes resolve with short rest and hydration.

Listening to your body is just as important as pushing your limits. Whether you're using home fitness equipment or working out in a gym, watch for these red flags to stay safe and avoid injury or medical emergencies.
