【Market Insight】U.S. Gym Traffic Continued to Rise in H1 2025
— Mid-Tier and High-Value, Low-Price Gyms See Strongest Growth
The U.S. fitness industry maintained its post-pandemic momentum in the first half of 2025, with both overall foot traffic and visit frequency on the rise, according to the latest report from the Health & Fitness Association (HFA).
Gym Visits Up 3.5% Year-on-Year, Reflecting More Consistent Workout Habits
HFA’s new FIT Tracker system monitored anonymous foot traffic data from nearly 11,000 fitness facilities nationwide. The data revealed that average gym visits increased by 3.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
In addition, the average monthly visit frequency per member rose by 1.4%, indicating that more Americans are incorporating regular exercise into their daily routines.
High-Value, Low-Price and Mid-Tier Gyms Lead the Growth
Among various gym categories, high-value, low-price (HVLP) gyms saw the strongest performance. Each location averaged nearly 193,000 visits in the first six months of 2025—a record-breaking figure for this segment and a year-over-year increase of 3.8%.
Mid-tier gyms also showed robust growth, attracting around 77,000 visits per location, up 3.7% from the previous year. Although typically smaller than HVLP gyms, these mid-range facilities continue to gain traction due to their accessible pricing and steady service quality.
Premium Clubs Maintain High Traffic, But Slight Dip Observed
Premium fitness clubs continued to lead in total foot traffic, with each location welcoming approximately 315,000 visits in six months. However, this figure represents a slight 0.9% decline year-over-year. Despite the dip, HFA noted that premium gym members remain highly engaged and loyal.
Meanwhile, boutique fitness studios experienced a modest increase of 0.8% in visits, showing the continued appeal of niche and personalized fitness experiences.
Industry Recovery Remains Strong, User Engagement Deepens
These findings reinforce the industry’s steady recovery from the pandemic. According to HFA, total gym membership in the U.S. reached a record 77 million people in 2024, accounting for roughly one-quarter of the population.
HFA President & CEO Liz Clark commented:
“The growth in both foot traffic and visit frequency highlights the critical role fitness facilities play in helping people stay active and healthy. Structured workouts are becoming an integral part of everyday life.”
Anton Severin, HFA’s VP of Research, added:
“The data speaks clearly—more Americans are integrating fitness into their daily lives, whether through traditional memberships or alternative formats.”
