10 Gym Exercises That May Be Doing More Harm Than Good
While the gym can help you get fit, not all exercises are safe or effective. Some moves put unnecessary strain on joints, nerves, and muscles — leading to pain or injury. Here are 10 exercises you may want to avoid or modify.
1.Seated Hip Abduction
Intended to tone the legs, but often overworks the piriformis muscle in the glutes rather than the outer thigh muscles. This can irritate the nearby sciatic nerve, causing pain.
2.Sit-Ups
Once a go-to ab exercise, sit-ups place repetitive stress on the spine without effectively targeting belly fat. Frequent bending can increase pressure on the lower back.
3.Front Dumbbell Raise
Lifting dumbbells to shoulder height in front of you puts significant stress on shoulder muscles and nerves, increasing the risk of strain or injury.
4.Behind-the-Neck Lat Pulldown
This motion can strain the neck and upper spine, especially for beginners. Poor form increases the risk of muscle pulls and spinal injuries.
